"Better Living Thru Chemistry" - Edie Nadelhalf. 2013. Glass sculptures.
In this piece, Nadelhalf makes it blatantly obvious that Chemistry, and chemicals are an important part of our lives.
However, the title of the work is debatable. Has the advancement of Chemistry and in particular, tablets, enhanced our life or made it worse?
The media is filled with constant reports of overwhelming statistics showing that millions of people are taking too many pills. We are taking pills that aren’t providing benefit, only peace of mind. Should we focus more on natural remedies, rather than demanding synthetic chemicals from our doctors, or buying them ourselves on our weekly shopping trips?
The advancement of chemistry has also led to terrible consequences in the past, with the use of gas and nuclear weaponry which resulted in thousand of immediate deaths and even more slow, painful deaths of radiation poisoning.
In conclusion, are we creating too many chemicals, as this art shows, for people who don’t posses the ability to use them responsibly? Should we rethink how readily available these chemicals are?
